Barber shops in African American communities are more than a place to get a haircut, a shave and other grooming services. It’s also a gathering sanctum where men meet and enjoy camaraderie, share stories about life events; get the latest information about community happenings. and In recent years, barber shops have become a setting where health promotion and study take place. Many neighborhoods barbershops are the center of activities where young boys learn a little something about manhood and get a taste of the cultural nuances of African American masculinity and prowess. During African American Week of Action, January 18 – 24, 2015, DC Health Link in conjunction with various community organizations and local businesses will place special emphasis on the importance of African Americans, especially men, enrolling in quality, affordable health insurance through DC Health Link. Studies have shown that African-American men have the highest disability and death rates from high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and prostate cancer of any racial or ethnic group in the country.
 

With only 4 weeks left to the February 15th deadline to sign up for 2015 coverage, DC Health Link will accelerate its outreach efforts to this population. Boys 2 Men Barber Shop Day is an enrollment event where DC Health Link representatives will setup shop to educate the African Americans men about the benefits of enrolling in health insurance coverage through DC Health link, share information about financial resources to help pay plan premiums and provide expert enrollment support.  In-person assisters and licensed health insurance brokers who can help with the enrollment process and plan selections will be available to answer questions.
