Beat the Clock...the Health Insurance Enrollment Deadline Is Midnight Tonight!

Monday, March 31, 2014
Begin the enrollment process online or at one of the Exchange’s extended hour centers to beat the deadline and avoid a tax penalty.

What/Who:

Today, March 31, 2014 is the last day for individuals and families to enroll in health insurance through the District’s health insurance exchange. Consumers have until midnight tonight to beat the health insurance enrollment deadline and avoid a tax penalty. Uninsured residents are strongly encouraged to visit a DC Health Link enrollment center today to begin the application process.

The ACA includes a requirement that many people be insured or pay a tax penalty. The tax penalty, which will take effect on the 2014 tax filing, is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child (up to $285 for a family) or 1.0% of family income, whichever is greater. Uninsured residents can avoid the penalty today by enrolling online at DCHealthLink.com, in-person or over the phone. DC Health Link’s Contact Center has extended call center hours today until midnight tonight.  Residents can reach the call center by dialing (855) 532-5465.

DC Heath Link certified in-person assisters and licensed health insurance brokers will be at each ‘Beat the Deadline’ enrollment site to provide information, answer questions and offer application and plan selection support as soon as consumers walk through the doors.

Background:

The new health law provides individuals, families, and small businesses in the District of Columbia with new options for quality, affordable health insurance. DC Health Link is the District’s online health insurance marketplace that allows visitors to shop, compare, and buy coverage that fits their needs and budgets.

Eligible residents who enroll in a health insurance plan through DCHealthLink.com by March 31, 2014, will have benefits effective May 1, 2014. Small businesses can enroll through DCHealthLink.com at any point.

Due to high demand for enrollment, residents who need in-person or telephone assistance will now have through April 15th to enroll. People with an online account with DC Health Link who have not yet selected a health plan also will have through April 15th to enroll in a private health plan.

When enrolling through DCHealthLink.com after March 31, consumers will be asked to attest that they sought either in-person help or telephone help or that they started the process of enrollment but could not finish. A complete list of circumstances that allow a person to enroll after open enrollment can be found here
