Overview
The DC Health Link Open Enrollment Period Student Intern Partnership Program (SIP) is an opportunity for students as well as recent graduates, who are interested in healthcare-related issues, to contribute to the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority’s (DCHBX) mission to provide District residents with access to quality, affordable health insurance. While developing valuable professional skills, the student interns will be engaged in various educational and outreach activities to encourage District residents, small business owners and their employees to enroll in health plans.
The interns will work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with DC Health Link staff and Assisters. Their responsibilities will vary but often include education and engagement outreach, event planning and execution, writing and contacts with internal & external partners, lit drops, canvassing and interaction with community partners, faith-based groups, neighborhood health providers and other stakeholders.
The SIP program incorporates opportunities for professional and personal growth through workshops and training specifically geared toward students and young professionals. The workshop and training will include topics such as networking with community partners, stakeholder engagement, grass roots outreach strategies, development of innovative outreach marketing materials, communications and more. Interns will be invited to participate in strategic planning meetings to share creative ideas and experiences as well as offer recommendations.
SIP interns will work with DC Health Link communications and outreach team along with additional support from other agency staff.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a career or education focus in the health policy and public affairs arena.
- Demonstrated interest and/or experience in community outreach, grassroots engagement, communications, or any related area of study or interest.
- Currently pursuing or holding a bachelor’s or graduate degree in public affairs, public health communications, or related field.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; Proficiency in Spanish, Amharic, or other languages a plus.
- Effective interpersonal skills and comfortable/confident in speaking to individuals and small groups.
Responsibilities
- Focus on community outreach, engagement, education, and communications.
- Participate in outreach activities and campaigns to reach, educate, and enroll uninsured DC residents.
- Attend events and activities to share information about DC Health Link, Open Enrollment and the importance and value of enrolling in health insurance.
- Participate in internship orientation, training, and strategy meetings.

- Submit timely reports including time sheets (hours worked), and outreach activity reports.
