DC Residents Gain Eight More Days to Shop, Compare, and Choose Health Insurance Plan for January 1 Benefits

Individuals and families now have until December 23.

The DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority announced today that District residents seeking health insurance coverage effective January 1, 2014, will have an additional eight days to shop, compare, and choose a plan that best meets their needs and budgets through DC Health Link, the District’s new online health insurance marketplace.

Consumers now will have until December 23, 2013, to choose a plan for 2014 and have benefits beginning on January 1. Individuals and families have 34 health plan options from three major insurance carriers – Aetna, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and Kaiser Permanente.

Moving forward, once an individual or family chooses a health plan they will receive an invoice directly from their insurance company.

Those who choose a plan after December 23, 2013, but before January 15, 2014, will have coverage effective February 1, 2014. Open Enrollment continues through March 31, 2014. Beginning in January, individuals and families who choose a plan between the 1st and 15th day of the month will have coverage beginning on the first day of the next month. Those who choose a plan between the 16th and last day of the month will have coverage effective the first day of the second following month.
