WHAT/WHO:
DC Health Link will be blanketing the District this weekend to help enroll DC’s residents in quality, affordable health plans now that Open Enrollment is in full swing. On Saturday, DC Health Link staff will be on hand at Freedom Plaza for AIDS Walk Washington to provide enrollment assistance and distribute enrollment materials. Also on Saturday, DC Health Link staff will be at three farmers markets to answer enrollment questions and distribute enrollment materials. These markets are run by DC Health Link small customer Community Foodworks, a local nonprofit that focuses on local food access, public health, and community building. A one-touch enrollment center at Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School will also be open to enroll residents.
On Sunday, DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority Executive Director Mila Kofman, DC Health Link staff, and its various community partners will join in prayer, praise and worship at the Reid Temple AME Church at Howard Theater for a spiritual launch of the upcoming enrollment season. In addition to information being shared from the pulpit about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the importance of good health and quality, affordable health insurance coverage through DC Health Link, certified in-person assisters and licensed health insurance brokers will be onsite to provide free, confidential enrollment support and help with plan selection. These experts will also answer questions, and provide information about financial help with plan premiums and Medicaid. Additionally, a bilingual caseworker will be on hand at a second church—Our Lady Queen of the Americas—to provide enrollment assistance and distribute enrollment materials.

BACKGROUND:
The Affordable Care Act provides individuals, families, and small businesses in the District of Columbia with affordable options for quality health insurance. DC Health Link is the District’s online health insurance marketplace which allows visitors to shop, compare, and enroll in coverage that fits their needs and budgets.
Open Enrollment for individuals and families begins November 1, 2016 and ends January 31, 2017. There are 20 private health insurance options (including 2 catastrophic plans) from CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente for individuals and families. Eligible District residents can enroll in a health insurance plan online through DCHealthLink.com or by calling (855) 532-LINK [5465]. Eligible residents who enroll on or before December 15, 2016 will have their benefits effective January 1, 2017. After that date, plan selections made by the 15th of each month during Open Enrollment will be effective on the first day of the following month. Small businesses—as well as individuals and families eligible for Medicaid—can enroll through DCHealthLink.com at any point.
