Mayor Gray Announces Committee to Advise His Administration on Implementation of Health Reform Act

Wednesday, May 4, 2011
Panel Will Provide Recommendations on Implementing 2010 Affordable Care Act in District

Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced the creation of the Mayor’s Health Reform Implementation Committee today. The committee will advise and make recommendations to the Mayor’s office on the implementation of the sweeping health-care reform passed by Congress in 2010.

The panel will be chaired by Wayne Turnage, Director of the Department of Health Care Finance and co-chaired by Department of Health Director Dr. Mohammad Akhter and Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking Commissioner William White. It will direct the work of subcommittees on Eligibility and Medicaid Expansion; Insurance; and Health Delivery System and is designed to ensure smooth and rapid implementation of the new legislation.

“The District is proud to be able to begin a coordinated process of implementing the President’s health-care-reform bill into the District’s health infrastructure,” said Mayor Gray. “Even though the District has one of the highest percentages of insured residents in the country, there is still much work that needs to be done to make sure all residents have access to more affordable and reliable care. This committee will serve as an excellent resource and tool to help guide us through this process as One City.”

Additional committee members will come from related agencies such as the Department of Human Services, the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Disability Services. The committee will submit its recommendations to Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services B.B. Otero so that her office can ensure interagency coordination in implementing the committee’s recommendations.
