Overview

The new health care law known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. Thousands of District residents, small business owners, and the employees of such businesses will soon have access to comprehensive, affordable health coverage. And many individuals and families will qualify for help paying for health insurance.

The District of Columbia is a national leader in fulfilling the promise of the health care law. The DC Health Benefit Exchange (HBX) is building a new online marketplace – called DC Health Link –  for District residents and small businesses to get the facts about their rights and benefits, shop for coverage, and compare options side-by-side before choosing the plan that best meets their needs and budgets. Residents will begin to enroll in the health plan of their choice on October 1, 2013, with coverage starting January 1, 2014.

To help residents and business owners understand their rights and responsibilities, DC Health Link is hosting a series of Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners Leadership Summits. Commissioners from each ward in the city will learn first-hand about the new health law from health experts. Commissioners will be encouraged to share the information and messages received at the Summits with their network of constituents.

Specific Objectives
  • To educate and inform ANC Commissioners about the affordable, high-quality health insurance options available through DC Health Link, the District’s new on-line health insurance marketplace
  • To answer questions and address concerns about the new health care law
