Overview
The new health care law known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. Thousands of District residents, small business owners, and the employees of such businesses will soon have access to comprehensive, affordable health coverage. And many individuals and families will qualify for help paying for health insurance.
The District of Columbia is a national leader in fulfilling the promise of the health care law. The DC Health Benefit Exchange (HBX) is building a new online marketplace – called DC Health Link – for District residents and small businesses to get the facts about their rights and benefits, shop for coverage, and compare options side-by-side before choosing the plan that best meets their needs and budgets. Residents will begin to enroll in the health plan of their choice on October 1, 2013, with coverage starting January 1, 2014.
To help residents and business owners understand their rights and responsibilities, DC Health Link and diverse community groups are hosting a series of Leadership Summits and Business Roundtables throughout the summer and fall. Leaders from various community organizations, businesses, and advocacy groups in the public/private sectors will meet with experts to learn first-hand about the new health law. The leaders will be encouraged to share the information and messages received at the Summits and Roundtables with their network of constituents. In turn, constituents and stakeholder groups can request DC Health Link experts to speak at educational forums for their members.
Specific Objectives
- To educate and inform leaders of diverse groups about the affordable, high-quality health insurance options available to them and their constituents under the new health law through DC Health Link, the District’s new on-line health insurance marketplace
